501 & 301

The game begins with each player having either 501 or 301 points. Most professional games are “501 up”. The aim of the game is for the player to reduce his or her score to zero. The last dart must hit either a double or the inner portion of the bullseye and must reduce the score to exactly zero, known as “doubling out” or “checking out”. If a player gets down to 1, or goes below zero, then they will be bust and their turn will end immediately. Their score will return to what it was at the start of their previous turn.
