Dart Rules

How To Play Darts

If you The following rules can be applied to nearly ever game of darts, although there are some variations depending on the game and the “house rules” of where you are playing:

  • The board should be 5’8” from the centre of the bullseye to the floor and the throw line exactly 7’ 9¼” from the face of the board (see dartboard setup)
  • The darts must not exceed 55g in weight.
  • The game, or “leg” is played between two players or two teams.
  • The players “diddle for the middle” to decide who will throw first. The player who throws a single dart closest to the bullseye will start.
  • Each player is permitted 9 throws to warm up.
  • Each player throws up to 3 darts each round.
  • When throwing the dart, the player is permitted to lean as far forward as they desire, providing their foot does not cross the toe line. If it does, a foot fault will be called and all three darts in that round will be void.
  • The wire on the board determines the scoring areas.
  • If a dart falls out of the board, or is knocked out by another dart, it will not count in the scoring.
  • The score should be counted before removing the darts from the board.
  • Each player is responsible for removing his or her own darts from the board when the scoring is complete.
